Certain aspects of daily life have truly left their mark on history. For example, using cages to let babies or children “get some fresh air” would horrify most (if not all) parents today. Yet, a few decades ago, it seemed like a brilliant and revolutionary idea.

Running a marathon is nothing out of the ordinary these days. Yet, until Kathrine Switzer’s bold and courageous participation in 1967, it was forbidden for women. Seeing her run while men tried to stop her is one of those iconic images that have become part of history.

Similarly, seeing locals walking on the beach with gas masks on their faces would seem crazy today. But at the time, equipment designed to protect against gas attacks was all the rage because it was wartime.
