I was about six years old when our entire family gathered around the dinner table. In the middle of the chatter, I suddenly announced, “Grandma! Should I tell everyone what you and Grandpa do when you’re both in your room?” Conversations stopped instantly. Grandma froze with her spoon halfway up, and Grandpa glanced at me with wide, worried eyes. I had no idea why everyone looked so tense—I thought I was about to share something exciting.
With all the confidence in the world, I finished, “She makes him practice card tricks!” The whole room erupted in laughter, the relief almost visible. Grandma pressed a hand to her chest, smiling as if she’d just escaped disaster. Grandpa chuckled, adjusting his glasses while shaking his head. I felt proud, thinking I’d revealed an impressive family secret.
