The idea came from his lawyer, Elliot Shaw, a man who had stood beside Marcus through hostile takeovers and lawsuits, a man whose loyalty had been proven in years, not speeches.

They met in a small, windowless conference room with no cameras and no assistants. Elliot slid a folder across the table.

“You can’t confront her without protection,” he said. “If she’s willing to steal, she might be willing to destroy.”

Marcus stared at the folder. “What are you suggesting?”

Elliot hesitated. “A test.”

Marcus’s mouth tightened. “That sounds cruel.”

“It’s worse,” Elliot said quietly. “It’s necessary.”

The plan grew like a storm cloud.

 

A staged accident. A controlled narrative. A medical team paid for silence. A false diagnosis that Marcus would appear paralyzed and mentally fogged.

He hated it the moment it existed.

But he hated the alternative more: a life built with someone who might be waiting for the right moment to cut his throat with a pen.

He agreed on one condition.

“My sons stay protected,” he said. “No matter what she does.”

Elliot nodded. “We’ll have safeguards.”

Marcus thought that would be enough.
