Elliot held up his phone. “Smile, Cassandra,” he said. “Everything’s being recorded.”

Cassandra froze.

6. The Stand
Ramon moved with calm authority, stepping between Cassandra and the doorway. “Ma’am,” he said evenly. “You need to stay where you are.”

Cassandra’s voice rose. “This is my house!”

Ramon’s expression didn’t change. “This is Mr. Hail’s property. And you are being investigated for coercion, financial fraud, and abuse.”

Cassandra looked at Elliot, desperate now, trying to recalibrate. “Elliot,” she pleaded, voice suddenly softer. “Marcus isn’t well. This is—this is confusion. He needs me.”

Elliot didn’t blink. “He needed you yesterday,” he said. “And you threw a ring at his chest like it was trash.”

Cassandra’s gaze snapped to Marcus, who was now shifting his legs slightly under the sheet, testing the strength he’d hidden.

Marcus sat up slowly, as if each movement was a declaration.
